Western Washington Animal
Salamander: This forest amphibian can be found in any moist, dark place
—
under rocks and logs, under bark, even under
leaf lifter. It must have moisture to survive. When first born, the salamander, like the frog, goes through a "polliwog" stage,
needing water to breathe until it goes through metamorphosis and is able to breathe air. The
salamander captures
insects with
its sticky tongue.
